1962:
The Birth Of Havaianas.
The first pair of Havaianas was born in 1962. It was inspired by
the Zori, a typical Japanese Sandal made of rice straw holes and
fabric straps. For this reason, Havaianas' rubber soles have a rice
grain texture, one of it's many unmistakeable features.
1970:
The creation of great slogans for Havaianas.
People were already trying to copy Havaianas. The famous Slogan
"Havaianas, the real ones" was launched. And one just
needs to hear the sentence "They don't lose shape, don't smell
and the thongs don't get loose" to remember the commercials
during the 70's & 80's.
1980:
Back then, 80 million pairs of Havaianas were already being sold
every year. Havaianas was such a crucial part of Brazilians' life
that in the 1980's it was considered as a basic necessity!
1993:
The custom of turning the Havaianas' white top upside down - leaving
the coloured part up - made sandals look uniform. This was the inspiration
for the Havaianas Top. Initially, there were 8 different shades
colouring Brazilians and nowadays, the rainbow of Havaianas Top
features 20 different colours.
1994:
"Havaianas. Everyone wears it"
The image of Havaianas goes through a great change. On TV, famous
Brazilians such as Malu Mader, Hortencia & footballer Bebeto
show their feet. It was true: everyone used Havaianas. In magazines,
the explosion of colours and fun images of the Havaianas advertisements
spell out the high profile of the brand.
1997:
Since the end of the 90's, Havaianas has never stopped creating
fashion. New prints, colours & models are created - even for
those who just took their first steps.
1998:
A new Havaianas model was created specially for the World Cup of
1998, featuring a small Brazilian flag on the strap. This model
soon became an object of desire abroad and it also became Brazilians'
pride.
2000:
Havaianas spread like wildfire worldwide. Hawaii, Australia, France
and many more. Holidaymakers buy them in Brazil to take them home.
They are featured in articles of popular magazines and newspapers
worldwide. Also, Havaianas are featured in some of the hippest shopping
windows on the planet. Nowadays they are available in more than
60 countries.
2003:
And the Oscar goes to...
Since 2003, Havaianas has been a part of the Oscar celebration,
and exclusive models are given to the nominees.
2004:
Diamonds are forever, so are Havaianas. In 2004, a special edition
of sandals signed by the Jewellery Company H. Stern featured 18ct
gold & diamonds.
2006:
Slim.
With more delicate & finer straps, the launch of the Slim line
became loved by the more demanding public and is already an icon
of the brand - pleasing women even more.
2008:
Continuing to rapidly grow abroad, Havaianas begins to have a bigger
presence in the European market. The spot chosen to house the brand
and a diverse team comprised of several different nationalities
was Madrid. Ole!
2009:
The year starts with a big brand event, the opening of Espaco Havaianas
in Sao Paulo, Brazil. A store that offers everything Havaianas lovers
have always dreamed of: a complete line of sandals, exclusive products
only sold to international markets, customization and new products.
Espaco Havaianas conveys the brand's upbeat mood and magic which
is impossible to describe with words... you need to see it with
your own eyes - if you're ever in Brazil!
